"I was born a
teacher. I think it's the value of passing on something that I care about. I
don't think I could live without teaching." |

Reading, Writing and Riding
In addition to teaching on the flat and over fences, Pepper is a noteworthy scholar and
author. You and Your Pony, her book on training green horses
and ponies, is out in hardcover and paperback here and in the UK and Europe.
Among her popular lectures are "Dressage: Ancient Art, Modern
Sport" and "Border Collie: Working Dog Extraordinary".
Technical articles on riding and schooling appear regularly in national
publications. She's ridden horses since childhood, studied under European horsemen,
and is committed to Classical Dressage as a riding discipline. International I-judge
Dr. H.L.M. van Schaik described Pepper Mainwaring-Healey as "an elegant rider with a
perfect position on a horse."
Supporting Women's Sports
Pepper is a strong proponent of women's sports. In fact, she was one of the first
women to study and teach Dressage in an era when men dominated the sport. Studying
under European Masters, she taught riding for three years between high school and college
and then put herself through college by teaching. She carried double majors in
English and history, graduating with honors from Simmons College (Boston) in 1948. She is
also an avid swimmer and cross-country skier, having set aside sailing and tennis, and
continues to ride...particularly two favorites: an Anglo-Hanoverian mare and her Lippizan
stallion. She focuses extensively on teaching adult women ("of course!") of all
riding abilities.
Honors & Interests
Recent honors include being unanimously elected Vice President of the newly-formed
Therapeutic Riding for the Handicapped in Southwestern New Hampshire. She has
received a prestigious grant from the Thanks Be To Grandmother Winifred Foundation
to complete her book-in-progress on teaching instructors the special aspects of working
with adult women riders.
Pepper was also named in the 1998 Marquis Who's Who of
American Women. Nearly 50 years ago, at Simmons College, she received a
similar honor: being named among Who's Who Among Students in American
Colleges and Universities. She has served as an "ask the
expert" columnist for Practical Horseman and was the originator of the Massachusetts
Farm Bureau's Equine Advisory Committee.
Pepper Mainwaring-Healey is actively involved in many state and community
organizations, including the NH Farm Bureau, the NH Horse Council, the Tri-Town
Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, the Langdon Community Club and the Covered Bridge
Preservation Project.
